Stephen Vitiello

Stephen Vitiello was born in 1964 in Richmond, Va. He lives and works in Richmond and New York. Stephen is both a sound and media artist that uses sound and sound effects to define the form and atmosphere of a spatial environment.

Stephen Vitiello is also considered to be an electronic musician. He has somehow figured out a way to transform atmospheric noises into creative soundscapes. Stephen has composed music for independent films, art installations and he has worked with artists such as Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler and Dara Birnbaum.

In 1999, Stephen Vitiello was awarded a studio space for six months on the ninety first floor of the World Trade Center Tower One. This is where he recorded the cracking noises of the building swaying under the stress of the winds after Hurricane Floyd.

I enjoy listening to Stephen’s creations. I believe it takes a tremendous amount of patience and time to put the right combination of sounds together to produce effective works. “I really like Parallelograms.”

Paul Pfeiffer

Paul Pfeiffer was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1966. He grew up in the Phillipines and moved to New York in 1990. He currently lives and works in New York. Paul attended Hunter College and went on to the Whitney Independent Study Program. He received the Bucksbaum Award from the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Paul’s work with mass media and video is incredible. I like the way he takes some of the stardom out of the athletic photographs and draws the focus towards the audience. He definitely uses the principles we discussed in class to make his art stand out.

Bill Viola

Bill Viola was born in 1951 and currently lives and works in Long Beach , California. He received his BFA in Experimental Studios from Syracuse University in 1973.

Bill Viola’s video art is very well put together. I watched the video entitled “Portrait de Famille” and enjoyed it. He has a remarkable sense of timing. Music is also very important in most of his work. Fantastic artist. I also feel that his staging for photography is great. I uploaded two of his pictures; “Quintet of Rememberance” and “Quintet of Silent.”

Jenny Holzer

Jenny Holzer was born in 1950 in Gallipolis, Ohio. She currently lives and works in New York. She attended several colleges such as Duke University, University of Ohio, Ohio University is Athens and also the Rhode Island School of Design. She studied abstract art and was influenced by Such artists as Rothko and Morris Louis.

Jenny likes to experiment with the use of language as art. She created a series called “Truisms” that came from Western and Eastern literature. She simplified writings and turned them into smaller phrases so that anyone could understand them. I thought that was very creative. Her work is very different and unique in its own way.

Robin creates Street Art that plays with the viewer’s imagination which creates an illusion of the street coming to life. I think his work is very creative and different from the other artists that we have discussed so far.Information from perryrubenstein.com and bellebyrd.
